A Guide to Mammograms for Breast Cancer Screening (for Men and Women)

Breast cancer screening is a key preventive health measure in Singapore for both men and women. Although often associated with women, breast cancer also affects men — particularly those with a family history of the disease. Currently, breast cancer is the most common cancer among Singaporean women, accounting for about 29% of cases. Men make up around 1% of breast cancer cases, highlighting the importance of awareness and regular screening for all.

Why Mammograms are Important

Mammograms are specialised X-rays that can detect early signs of breast cancer, often before symptoms arise. Early detection improves treatment outcomes, minimises the need for invasive procedures, and enhances survival rates. By revealing lumps or tissue changes that are otherwise undetectable, mammograms are a critical part of preventive healthcare.

Mammograms involve compressing the breast between two plates to get clear images, which can sometimes cause discomfort. However, this compression is necessary to detect even small tumours, making regular screenings essential for early detection.

The Fujifilm Amulet Innovality mammogram equipment at DA Orchard MedSuites is designed to improve comfort and accuracy, featuring:

  • Rounded edges: To minimise sharp pressure during compression.
  • Larger compression plate: Distributes pressure more evenly to help reduce discomfort.
  • High-resolution imaging: Provides precise imaging, reducing the likelihood of needing repeat scans.

Screening Recommendations in Singapore

The recommended frequency for mammograms in Singapore depends on age, gender, and individual risk factors:

  • Women aged 50-69: Every two years, as recommended by the Health Promotion Board
  • Women aged 40-49: Annual screenings may be beneficial due to denser breast tissue in this age group, which can make detection more challenging
  • Women above 70: Should consult with their doctor to determine the need for screenings based on their health and medical history.
  • Women under 40: Mammograms are generally not routine unless there is a higher risk of breast cancer (e.g., family history, genetic predisposition). If you have concerns, consult with your doctor to discuss the appropriate screening options, which may include ultrasound or MRI.
  • Men with family history or genetic risk factors: Men with a family history of breast cancer or genetic mutations like BRCA1/BRCA2 should discuss screening options with a doctor starting around age 35-40. Men are encouraged to be mindful of any unusual changes in breast tissue and seek medical advice if they notice lumps or other symptoms.

What to Expect and How to Prepare

To make your mammogram experience more comfortable and efficient, here are some tips:

  • Duration: The screening typically takes about 10-15 minutes, with each compression lasting only a few seconds.
  • Side Effects: You may experience mild soreness or redness, which usually subsides within a day.
  • Scheduling Tips: To minimise sensitivity, try scheduling your mammogram about a week after your menstrual cycle. Avoid deodorants, perfumes, or lotions on the day of your appointment, as they may interfere with imaging.
  • Preparing for the Appointment: Wear a two-piece outfit for easier access, and bring any previous mammogram results for comparison. This helps radiologists monitor any changes over time.
  • Results Timeline: Results are typically available within a few days. A DA MedSuites doctor will follow up to discuss findings and advise next steps if further evaluation is needed.

Breast cancer screening is just one important part of a comprehensive health screening. Regular screenings not only help detect breast cancer early but also allow you to monitor other aspects of your health, such as heart health, bone health, and overall wellness.

By scheduling a health screening, you’re taking a proactive approach to safeguard your well-being and address any potential issues before they become serious.
